Step outside this afternoon and you might notice something a little different about the sky. Today, Wednesday, August 12, 2026, a partial solar eclipse is passing over the New York City area. If you're anywhere in Northern New Jersey, you've got a front-row seat.
It's not a total eclipse, and the coverage is modest. About 10% at its peak. But it's still one of those rare moments that reminds you to pause, look up, and appreciate something bigger than whatever's on your to-do list.

When to watch
For those of us in the NYC metro and Northern New Jersey area, the eclipse begins at 1:07 p.m. today and peaks at around 1:54 p.m. At that point, the moon will be covering roughly 10% of the sun. Enough to notice a subtle dimming and an unmistakable crescent shape if you're watching through proper eclipse glasses. The event wraps up at 2:38 p.m., so you still have time.
One important thing: protect your eyes
Because this is a partial eclipse and not a total one, the sun is never fully blocked. That means it is never safe to look directly at the sun without protection, even at peak coverage. You need ISO-certified solar eclipse glasses or a safe handheld solar viewer the entire time. Regular sunglasses won't cut it. This is the part that matters most, so please don't skip it.
No totality here. But that's okay.
The path of totality for today's eclipse runs through Greenland, Iceland, and Spain. Not the tri-state area. What we get is a partial view, which is still worth stepping outside for. There's something grounding about watching the moon slide across the face of the sun, even just a little. It's a good reminder that the world is bigger and more fascinating than our daily routines tend to let us remember.
