FIFA World Cup 2026: The First Two Weeks Recap. NJ Is All In.

FIFA World Cup 2026: The First Two Weeks Recap. NJ Is All In.

If you blinked, you missed something. The first two weeks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been everything this tournament promised and then some. Records broken, upsets nobody saw coming, and the kind of moments that remind you this is the biggest sporting event on the planet.

And it is happening right here. On our turf.

Here is what went down from June 11 through June 22.

The moments everyone is still talking about

Lionel Messi showed up to this tournament like he had something to prove. A hat trick against Algeria in the opening week tied the all-time World Cup goals record, and then he broke it entirely with a brace against Austria on June 22, putting him at 17 and 18 career World Cup goals. At 38 years old. Let that settle for a second.

Erling Haaland was not far behind. Two goals on his World Cup debut against Iraq, then two more against Senegal on June 22 to lead Norway into the knockout round. Norway is a team people are suddenly paying very close attention to.

The United States advanced to the knockout round after a dominant 2-0 win over Australia on June 19. No drama, no scrambling. Just a clean, confident performance from a USMNT that is playing with something to say. NJ residents with MetLife Stadium circled on their calendar are feeling very good right now.

Canada had their moment too. A 6-0 demolition of Qatar on June 18, including a hat trick from Jonathan David, sent a message to the entire tournament. This is not the Canada that used to show up just happy to be there.

Germany looked unstoppable early, putting seven past Curacao on June 14, then grinding out a last-gasp 2-1 win over Ivory Coast on June 20 when it looked like they might drop points. France, Netherlands, Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia have all looked sharp. This is a wide-open tournament and nobody feels safe.

The upsets kept things honest. Cape Verde held Spain to a 0-0 draw on June 15, one of the biggest shocks of the group stage so far. Japan took down Tunisia 4-0 on June 21 in the biggest margin of victory by an Asian nation in World Cup history. Paraguay, playing with ten men, eliminated Turkey 1-0. Nobody handed anything to anyone.

Why NJ feels different this summer

It is not just the games. It is the energy in the neighborhoods. The flags hanging from porches in Rutherford and Kearny. The watch parties filling up restaurants in Montclair and Saddle Brook. The group chats blowing up at 9am on a Tuesday because Messi scored again.

This is what happens when the world comes to your backyard. And with England vs. Panama at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford coming up on June 27, the energy is only going to build from here.

We have been out in these communities every day, and the World Cup is genuinely all anyone wants to talk about. Clients rescheduling calls around kickoff. Families gathering in ways that feel a little like the holidays but with more jerseys.

If you want to know where to watch the remaining matches with a crowd that actually cares, we put together a local dining and watch guide for Northern NJ. Link in bio.

And if this summer has you thinking about what it would mean to put down roots in a community like this, one that shows up for the big moments, we are always happy to have that conversation. No pressure, just clarity.
